Book Covers Abroad

As I explained in a recent post about book jackets as an endangered art form, I love cover art. We’re told from a young age not to judge a book by its cover, but the amount of time, money, and effort that goes into designing book covers shows that this old adage rarely applies to actual book buying. It’s fascinating to look at how book jackets are envisioned by different artists, and the way that culture plays a role in determining how a book is artistically interpreted. The Guardian published an interesting article attempting to find an explanation for why foreign publishers create new jacket art, and showing how a few designers go about the designing process: Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover, Particularly in France.
