Booking Through Thursday: Influence

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted here. To participate, answer the question, and provide a link to your response in a comment at the host blog.

Are your book choices influenced by friends and family? Do their recommendations carry weight for you? Or do you choose your books solely by what you want to read?

There are a few friends and family members whose opinions carry tremendous weight for me. My mom and grandpa are both avid readers, and have helped me find some of my favorite authors. For example, my mom read Jodi Picoult before I did, and now we have both read all of her books. She has also passed along some great Jonathan Kellerman books, including Devil’s Waltz, which is one of my favorite psychological thrillers.

My grandpa tends to make recommendations that are a little farther outside my comfort zone, but I’m thankful for that. He has good taste and sometimes I need a little push to try something different. I take his book suggestions seriously because I know he takes mine seriously, and I think we both end up reading a lot of things that we normally wouldn’t.

My friend Isaiah is a poet; I like poetry, but I’m sure I wouldn’t read nearly as much of it without his influence. He gets me a book of poems every year for my birthday and keeps me up to date on publications I might be interested in. I trust him as a valuable news source on Denise Duhamel, Priscilla Becker, Ellen Bass, and quite a few other poets.

All of these people lead me toward books that I probably would not choose on my own. I have to admit, though, that even when somebody suggests something that I want to read, it might still take me a while to get to it. My personal TBR pile is just so long, and I find it tough to stick more in there. However, more often than not, I tend to be the one doing the recommending because I consume books so quickly.

  • It’s nice to have some people around you who recommend good books- especially the challenging ones! Poetry would be a challenge for me; I hardly read it at all.

  • It sounds like you have some wonderful sources for great book ideas! Poetry is something I don’t always think to read, but I love it when I do.

  • I love that I have you in my life for book recommendations and as a source for the books in person 🙂
