Booking Through Thursday: Signature

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme hosted here. To participate, answer the question, and provide a link to your response in a comment at the host blog.

Do signed copies excite you? Tempt you? Delight you? Or does it not matter to you?

Every time I go to a book signing, I wonder what I’m doing there. It takes a little self-reminding to figure it out. The actual signature doesn’t mean much to me, and I usually get books signed to me, so they aren’t worth anything extra monetarily. However, I really enjoy having the opportunity to meet authors whose work I liked. The signature is comparable to a snapshot of the event, a reminder of that meeting. I can look at the signature in any of my signed books and immediately remember everything about the signing.

In the case of my Terry Goodkind books, signings mean even more. I started going to Goodkind signings when I was about 14, and I’ve kept in touch with many of the wonderful people I met there. Now, signings are an opportunity to reunite with friends from all over the world who I never have a chance to see otherwise. Those books are worth a little extra to me because the signature reminds me of the people I got it with and sightseeing and launch parties. There are a lot of wonderful memories contained in those autographs.

P.S. Feel free to check out the new Reclusive Bibliophile Facebook page; I have been adding pictures of all of my signed books there.

  • Hi, Melanie and thank you for visiting! I love what you said about signing being a snapshot of the event…

I’m already enjoying Death comes for the Archbishop. I’ve never read Willa Cather and I’m getting the definite sense that I’ve missed something special. Did you know that Cornflower Books (http://www.cornflowerbooks.co.uk/) is hosting a group reading of this book starting next week. I’m discovering all these wonderful blogs with like-minded readers and this is what inspired me to finally read this book.
