Contest Fraud?

I’m a bit concerned about my contests because I am noticing quite a few entries from the same IP address with different names and email addresses. I hate to believe that people would cheat on book giveaways in which I am donating my own books and shipping money, and it discourages me from wanting to do more of these kinds of things in the future. If you think this post might apply to you and you can provide some explanation, please contact me and let me know what is going on. Otherwise, I will plan to disqualify multiple entries from a single IP address. Of course, that does not apply to comments for extra entries based on tweets or blog posts.

  • Apparently…believe me, I was surprised by it, too. I think people assume that if they just write in different names and email addresses, they can enter as many times as they want. I get emails from wordpress with an IP address every single time, and at first I wasn’t paying attention, but then I started to notice that I was seeing the same number over and over again.

  • Sometimes people use computers at schools or other places so several people might have the same IP address?

  • Absolutely. It’s possible, but the entries have all come in one after another, so seems unlikely. However, that it is why I wanted to offer people a chance to explain it.

  • I’ve heard of this happening, usually rare, but I’m still shocked and surprised by this.
