Crash Into Me: Character Interview and Giveaway

I read and reviewed Albert Borris’ Crash Into Me several months ago, and today I am excited to share a character interview with Audrey as part of a tour with Teen Book Scene. You can check out the rest of the tour information here.

Crash Into Me is about a group of suicidal teens who go on a road trip to visit the graves of celebrities who have committed suicide. They made a pact that at the end they will all kill themselves. The book does a great job of portraying suicidal ideation and the ambivalence associated with it, as well as educating readers about suicide. This sometimes falls into the trap of sounding a little too educational for authenticity’s sake, but overall it is a wonderful book that dares to go to some dark places few others will venture into.

What is your favorite Nirvana song?
“Heart-Shaped Box,” definitely.

If you could spend a day with Kurt Cobain, what would you do?
We would totally just hang out. Probably do drugs and listen to him play. I would love to take him to the bar where he first played and just be together And Courtney Love, with those really big lips…I would just like to kiss her. Just kidding! But Jin-Ae would totally like to kiss her.

What is the worst lie you ever told?
Probably that I ever tried to commit suicide. I lied about my head and the pan; jumping down the stairs…they were all lies. So sue me.

What is the one thing you wish you could tell your parents?
I would tell them to both just grow up. I would tell my Dad to be a man, to pay child support. I would tell my mom to spend less time with the men in her life and start paying attention to her daughter. She doesn’t have any time for me. To do things with me.

Were you ever seriously considering killing yourself?
No. But I would have let my friends kill themselves…if they really wanted to.

What has your relationship with Owen been like since the road trip?
Owen and I broke up a couple months ago. He asked me to do it, because he found someone else. Her name is Maureen. It was unexpected, but I’m okay. You know, I have a new boyfriend, too! His name is Mark; he’s a little older and plays the bass. Both M’s, Maureen and Mark. It is meant to be.
