Overdue Book Fines Really Add Up

First president George Washington has amassed over $4,000 in overdue book fines. He checked out two books from a New York library over 221 years ago and never returned them. The librarians are not overly concerned with the fines, but wonder where the missing books ended up. These days, the books themselves are probably worth over $4,000.

See an article about the missing books from CNN here: First president owes library $4,577 and two books.

  • That’s amazing that they have records that far back! $4,000 in 1776 standards is over a year’s salary. 🙂
