Waiting on Wednesday: Taking Off

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Taking Off by Jenny Moss won’t keep you waiting long. It will be released by Walker Books for Young Readers on January 4th. Taking Off is about a teen girl who meets Christa McAullife, the woman who is supposed to be the first teacher in space on the Challenger mission. Those who know even a little about modern space exploration know how that turns out. As a former NASA engineer, Moss brings her own authentic experiences to the story.

This past semester I captioned a class on the history of exploration. It dealt with everything from the early land and seafaring explorers to the current Mars Rover project. Just being in the class sparked my interest in space exploration more than I anticipated, so when I heard about this book I was really excited. It sounds unlike anything I have read before. I’m also intrigued by the idea of a story that sits on the boundary of historical and contemporary. Every time I look at the cover of Taking Off, I find it completely and totally mesmerizing, and I can only hope that the book is the same.

  • I’m waiting on this book too! I like that it’s a little historical & a little contemporary. Plus, living in Houston (home of NASA) I have a soft spot for anything space related. Great pick, Melanie!
