What is YA?

Apparently I’m in the blog post sharing mood today. I always think it is interesting to consider what distinguishes adult from YA, and YA from MG. Sometimes, it seems fairly clear that a book is YA, but other times the lines can get rather fuzzy. In a panel discussion at the LA Times Festival of Books, David Levithan said he no longer hates the term YA because he now differentiates it from “old adult,” the type of books where characters go on and on about their kids or their marriages falling apart or their midlife crises. In a fantastic blog post, Gayle Forman talks about the criteria she would use to define YA: What Makes YA?
